Reflective Blog #4

I have to admit, when I enrolled for this course, I thought that given my background and experience, that much of the material might be introductory in nature and things with which  I already feel competent. However, as the course progressed, I encountered new discoveries and took away some new resources and ideas that I can and have already used in my classroom and professional growth.. One thing, in particular that  I found to be informative, relevant and helpful was the P21 Framework.  What I find to be noteworthy was the design of this framework and how it connects 3 entities that are quite often isolated; those being the Common Core, NETS and Inquiry-based Learning/PBL.  In fact, yesterday I shared ideas from the P21 framework with the district Superintendent and Elementary Principals in a presentation to promote technology education program in my district.  I will also be presenting this information to elementary teaching staff during the month of January.

Another facet of the class that has given me new vision for future career possibilities is the notion of virtual/online learning.  I am a person who likes new challenges and thrives on change.  Since I started my teaching career, I have had 3 very different teaching assignments (by choice).  The last 5 years I have served as the elementary technology specialist and I’m feeling a bit restless and ready for a new challenge.  The idea of teaching online is intriguing to me and I would like to seriously explore the possibilities.

Keeping up with new technologies is not a chore for me.  Because I have innate interest and it’s an integral part of my job, I am constantly seeking and researching new ideas and technologies.  I am addicted to my Google Reader which I am subscribed to every tech guru out there and I am continuing to build my Twitter network as well.  I enjoy going to technology conferences such as MACUL but I would like to attend an ISTE convention someday.

One of my biggest dilemmas right now is how to perpetuate, educate and train teachers to authentically integrate technology in their instruction..  The past models of professional development have not proven effective and so I am constantly looking for a model that will be ongoing, integrated with instruction, sustainable, realistic and embraced by teachers and administration.  Until then, I continue to forge ahead as a disciple for positive change in instruction and learning.
